Do not smoke or allow flame or sparks around fuel
or battery.
Keep a tire extinguisher in close reach.
Always support your vehicle with safety stands If
it Is necessary to work underneath the vehicle. The jack supplied with the vehicle is not
adequate for this purpose.
When working underneath the vehicle without
safety stands but with the wheels on the ground, make sure the vehicle Is on level ground,
that the wheels are locked and that the engine cannot be started. Remove the Ignition
key.
Incomplete or improper servicing may cause
problems In the operation of the vehicle. If in doubt about any servicing, have It done by
a properly equipped and qualified workshop.
Improper maintenance during the warranty period
may affect your warranty coverage.
Never run engine in an enclosed area. Carbon
monoxide, a lethal gas, is emitted by diesel engines.
FUEL FILTER
Accumulated watershould bedrained regularly. Fuel filter
replacement and water drainage intervals are specified in the Maintenance Schedule at the
end of this section.
WARNING
Turn the engine off and let It cool down. Hot
components can burn skin on contact and ignite fuel.
Do not smoke or have anything in the area that
can Ignite fuel.
Handle fuel only In well ventilated areas.
Disconnect ground strap from battery to prevent
sparking.
Heed warnings on pages 46 and 47.
To drain water from fuel filter
Open vent screw on fuel filter flange.
Loosen drain valve and into a container, drain about
half a cup or until drained fuel is pure.
Tighten drain valve and vent screw.
To replace filter
Loosen filter, using filterwrench if necessary.
Spin old filter off.
Install new filter.
